In this video he makes his new robot sad... then happy!

So, in this video I realize I ask him to count to 10 about a hundred times, but thats because I had never heard him do it before and I was shocked! Right before the video he went from 1 to 10 perfectly and I really wanted to capture it. Honestly, I didn't know he could count to 3... smarty pants

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Aven got so many cool presents this year, and for the first time - he LOVED opening them all by himself. A huge thank you to everyone who made his Christmas and Hanukkah so special this year. From dump trucks to robots to owls and Thomas the Train, Aven couldn't be happier!! (though he does ask for "more presents please?" every day now :)

I feel like I should add that Aven does remarkably well around the fire. He knows it's hot and doesn't go near it. Though we don't usually have it lit until after he's in bed, we thought it was a nice touch on Christmas morning and Aven loved it. So... don't worry :)

A huge thank you to gramma and papa rosenthal for hanging with Aven so we could enjoy some much needed rest and relaxation in Jamaica. Aven hardly even missed us!! (Looks like Gramma was the one taking all the pictures, since she's not in any!)

First vacation post baby. We had planned for months to go to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and Grandma and Grandpa Rosenthal would fly in from Colorado to stay with Aven for a week. We had the time off work and were all ready to go. Nothing could stop us now....

Well, nothing.... except for Hurricane Rina, scheduled to hit Playa Del Carmen the same day we were.

After a minor panic attack and 3 hours on the phone scrambling to change EVERYTHING... we were ready... again.

Montego Bay, Jamaica - here we come!

I envy the "no problem mon" attitude of the Jamaican culture and was blown away by the beauty of the ocean and tropical hillsides in the area surrounding the resort we stayed at. It was an absolutely wonderful week! We missed our little man, but he had a great time with Grandma and Papa and we were able to reconnect as husband and wife, not JUST mom and dad.

Oh... and, we almost forgot it was Halloween until we saw this while eating poolside....

To beat the crowds, we took a drive out to Yacolt Washington to meet the Morrison's at a family run pumpkin patch! Aven had a blast!

Although still not sure what to think, for once Aven wasn't completely terrified of an animal bigger than him! At one point, he even asked to go faster :)

In the bath tonight, I attempted to teach Aven how to smile. Hoping that he'll figure it out soon so I don't have to make such ridiculous sounds and faces just to get a cute picture. He's always just opened his mouth wide when smiling, but I think he's starting to figure out how to flash his pearly whites too. We are getting there (although the smile attempts do look pretty goofy still)!

For a kid that's been slightly behind the curve his whole life, I was surprised when Aven's teacher at daycare told me this morning "He's doing so well. You know, he's really very advanced for his age!" Advanced?! My kid is advanced?!

He's about ready to move to the Toddler room at daycare. Toddler!? Seriously? This new room has a toilet in it and a sink so he can wash his own hands! Really? A Toddler?

[yes, I realize there are a a few too many exclamation points and question marks above. But, what can I say - that's how a new mom feels when her baby becomes a toddler]

He had breakfast in there today and was so excited he looked at me, waved and said "bye bye Momma" before I was even ready to go. Okay, I get it - you are a big kid now and you are not exactly impressing your older friends by having your mom hang out in the room. Is this really happening?

Okay, so with all this talk of growing up and being so "advanced" it got me thinking how quickly he is learning new words so I thought I'd see if I could write them all down! I'm sure I'll forget some...

First, for comparison, here is what I told the doctor he was saying at his 18 month appointment, when we were told he was a little behind, but in the normal range:

I suppose I should have figured out if he's saying it, he wants it!

Wow!! That's a lot of progress in 3 months!

We had a little, very mellow 4th of July dinner at our friends' house (okay, it was July 3rd but close enough!) and went across the street to a playground with their little girls afterwards. Aven had a BLAST! He was climing and running and even going down the "big kid slide" all by himself. I had several "Holy cow, when did he get so big?!" moments.

In fact, we actually set it up the same day of this video because he was having so much fun. By the way, this was filmed at Cafe Sip and Play, my favorite place for Coffee on the weekends because Aven can run around and play while I drink coffee and surf the free wi fi on my ipad. Yes, I am trying to win the Mother of the year award :)

Aven's Great Aunt Kat sent him this doggy (named Scout) for Christmas and he's finally getting old enough to really play with him. He hugs and kisses him and dances to all his songs. Super cute. Thanks again Aunt Kat.

By the way, at the end of the Video Aven notices my ipad (which I was using to film him dancing) and thinks it's his Daddy! Cracks me up. Justin was in Korea last week and we did video chat with him using my ipad as much as possible. It was really cool, but now Aven gets very confused when he sees it and thinks his Daddy is inside of it! Silly guy...

This year we didn't realize we were going on the same day that Aven would come down with the stomach flu :( Some of the pictures could have come out a bit better had he had a little more energy and wasn't feeling so crumby. That said, it's still a beautiful place and was a fun way to spend a saturday morning together. It was a little chilly, but really a very nice day. The afternoon was gorgeous, but it was also nice to beat the crowds!

This place is awesome in the summer. Lots of people and dogs to look at, and the streetcar which Aven loves! Water, climbing, grass to run on, and a great coffee shop. Not to mention its walking distance from Justin's office/garage. I have a feeling we'll be spending a lot of time here this summer!

CHRISTMAS 2010: With Hanukah a distant memory (and clearly not as fun for pictures), it is suddenly time for Christmas. Wow, where did this year go?

We all slept in until 9am (oh, do I miss the days when getting up at 9am was early!), had a yummy breakfast together and then skyped with Aunt Kathy, Grampa Jim and Cousin Eric. We opened lots of presents and stayed in our PJ's until 2pm! Good times.

Aven kicked off this rainy sunday by sleeping in until 10am! It's supposed to be beautiful again next week (or so they say!) but I was kind of glad to have a rainy day to stay in and be lazy. Today Emily and Marcus tied the knot, and Aven attended his 4th wedding! It was absolutely beautiful. The sun came out and the setting was gorgeous. The ceremony was simple, and very sweet. And Aven was very well behaved.
